Free Video Metadata Checker Online

Instantly inspect the hidden metadata inside any video file — duration, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio channels and more. Works entirely in your browser. No software installation, no account required.

What Is Video Metadata?

Video metadata is technical and descriptive information stored inside a video file alongside the actual video and audio streams. It is written automatically by cameras, smartphones, and editing software and is invisible during normal playback. Using this free video metadata checker, you can read all that hidden information in seconds without installing any software.

What Video Metadata Can You View?

  • Duration & Size: Total running time, file size and bitrate
  • Video Stream: Codec (H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1…), resolution (width × height), frame rate, colour depth
  • Audio Stream: Codec (AAC, MP3, AC3…), sample rate, channel count (stereo, 5.1…), bitrate
  • Creation Date: When the video was recorded by the camera or device
  • Device Info: Make and model of the recording device when embedded by the camera app
  • GPS Location: Latitude and longitude if the recording device attached location data (common on smartphones)
  • Container Format: MP4 (MPEG-4), QuickTime MOV, major brand and compatible brands

Supported Video Formats

MP4 and MOV (QuickTime) files are fully supported, including videos recorded on iPhone, Android, GoPro, DSLR cameras and screen-recording software. Support for AVI, MKV and WEBM is planned.

Why Does Video Metadata Matter?

  • Privacy: Videos shot on smartphones often embed GPS coordinates. Sharing them online without stripping this data can reveal your precise location.
  • Compatibility debugging: Confirm the exact codec and container before uploading to a platform that has encoding requirements.
  • Editing workflows: Verify frame rate, colour space and audio channel layout before importing into a video-editing application.
  • Forensics & verification: Check creation timestamps and device info to verify when and where a video was recorded.

Is It Safe to Upload My Video?

Yes. Only the first 2 MB of your video are transferred to extract the metadata header — the full video content never leaves your device. If the metadata is stored at the end of the file (a common case with some MP4 recordings), the tool performs a targeted second pass on the final 2 MB only. Any temporary files on the server are automatically deleted within 1 hour.
